Biography
James journey with yoga began nine years ago when his uncle invited him to attend yoga class with him back in the spring of 1997. An on and off Ashtanga yoga student since, James never felt quite at home with the yoga styles he encountered.
It was not until his participation in an Amrit Yoga retreat in Seattle, WA in the fall of 2002 that he not only found a wonderful physical discipline, but also a philosophy of life that gelled with much of his personal beliefs. In that first retreat he erased anxiety and depression that had haunted him since his early childhood. In one moment, Gurudev instructed 'let go of everything'. And he did. In one instant, he had let go of whatever had been causing the anxiety and depression all those years. Grateful for what he had been given, it was only natural that he would want to transmit the teachings to others.
James' unique style of teaching combines active yoga postures, inward focus and meditative awareness to achieve peace in one's life. James teaches body movement to private individuals, groups and organizations. Currently on Mary, Queen of Peace's staff as the parish yoga instructor, James teaches over twenty yoga and yoga nidra (Experiential Relaxation) classes every week to both members of the parish and the community.
In addition to being certified as a Level II Amrit Yoga Instructor and Yoga Nidra teacher, James is on track to complete both his teaching certification in Yoga Nidra as well as his Masters in yoga education through Hindu University of America. During the summer of 2006, James was initiated into the Lineage of Love and Light as Kalidas.
